COACH-TO-COACH’ DUSTBIN SYSTEM & SOURCE SEGREGATION
PAVING WAY TO ZERO WASTE STATION
Prayagraj, 20 Oct (HS): In compliance with the directives
of the General Manager, North Central Railway, two innovative and outstanding
best practices have been successfully implemented at Prayagraj Junction under
Special Campaign 6.0 to establish permanent cleanliness across the station
premises. During train arrivals, it was frequently observed that passengers
discarded trash directly onto platforms through the windows of sleeper and
general coaches. To resolve this issue effectively, sanitation teams equipped
with mobile wheeled dustbins are now deployed for coach-to-coach service. As
soon as a train docks, these sanitation workers move alongside each coach to
collect waste directly from passengers before it hits the platform.
This proactive measure has led to a remarkable decline in
platform littering and has drawn high praise from traveling passengers. Simultaneously,
to enforce robust waste management practices, a source segregation mechanism
has been introduced. Rather than transferring general sweepings directly to a
central dumping point, the collected waste is classified right at the source
into four distinct categories—dry, wet, sanitary, and domestic hazardous—prior
to disposal.
This streamlined process ensures seamless compliance with
Solid Waste Management rules while accelerating Prayagraj Junction’s journey
toward becoming a certified Zero Waste Station. Both best practices are
currently being executed on a pilot basis across selected trains, yielding
exceptional results. North Central Railway plans to scale up and fully expand
this model across all trains and platforms.
