Nagoya, 02 October (H.S.): India’s Parveen Hooda won the gold medal in the women’s 65kg boxing category at the 2026 Asian Games on Friday, defeating Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien-chin by a 3-2 split decision in a closely fought final. With the victory, Parveen became the third Indian woman boxer to win an Asian Games gold medal. Mary Kom had achieved the feat in 2014, while Lovlina Borgohain won gold in the 75kg category earlier on Friday at the same Games.
The final was a closely contested affair, with both boxers adopting a cautious approach in the opening round and avoiding an overly aggressive start. After receiving a warning from the referee, Parveen produced some decisive combinations and secured a 10-9 score from all five judges.
Chen Nien-chin, a bronze medallist at the Paris Olympics, responded strongly in the second round. Fighting aggressively, the Chinese Taipei boxer edged the round 10-9 on all five judges’ scorecards, bringing the contest level.
In the decisive third round, Parveen maintained her composure under pressure and did enough to secure the verdict. She won the bout 3-2 on a split decision to claim the gold medal.
The women’s 65kg category is a new weight division at the 2026 Asian Games. Parveen therefore became the inaugural Asian Games champion in the event, putting her name in the record books as the first gold medallist in the newly introduced category.
Born on April 15, 2000, Parveen hails from Rohtak, Haryana. She trains at the National Centre of Excellence in Rohtak and is part of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) Development programme.
Parveen has already established herself on the international boxing circuit. She won a bronze medal at the 2022 World Boxing Championships and followed it with gold at the 2022 Asian Boxing Championships. She also claimed gold at the 2025 World Boxing Cup Finals, adding another major title to her growing international record.
Parveen’s Asian Games triumph adds another gold medal to India’s boxing campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Games and further strengthens the country’s record in women’s boxing at the continental event.
