
Third consecutive Asian Games medal for shot-putter; MLA Gurlal Ghanour calls achievement an inspiration for young athletes
Patiala, 02 October (H.S.): Olympian and Punjab Police DSP Tajinderpal Singh Toor received a warm welcome at Punjabi University, Patiala, on his return after winning the silver medal in men’s shot put at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
A large number of sportspersons, youngsters and local residents attended the felicitation ceremony organised in the presence of Ghanour MLA Gurlal Singh. Toor secured silver with a best throw of 20.64 metres, making it his third consecutive Asian Games medal after gold medals in 2018 and 2022.
Speaking on the occasion, Toor thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government, his department and family for supporting his sporting career. He said injuries had affected his preparation and performance this time, but he would continue working towards winning gold at upcoming international competitions.
Toor said improved training facilities and support for participation in major competitions could play an important role in boosting athletes’ confidence. He added that sustained institutional support was essential for helping sportspersons compete successfully at the international level.
Welcoming the Olympian, MLA Gurlal Ghanour said Toor’s achievement would motivate young players to pursue athletics and other sports. Gurlal is the sitting MLA from the Ghanour Assembly constituency in Patiala district.
He said winning medals in technically demanding disciplines such as shot put and discus throw required years of hard work, discipline and consistent preparation. He expressed hope that Toor would deliver stronger performances in future international competitions and bring more medals for the country.
The MLA also referred to sports infrastructure initiatives in Punjab, saying the development of playgrounds and improved sporting facilities could provide greater opportunities to youngsters.
SDM Gurdev Singh, Daljit Singh Rana, District Sports Officer Navjot Singh Dhaliwal, international wrestler and Wrestling Association Patiala president Randhir Singh, Athletics Association president Harbhajan Singh, members of Toor’s family and several sports enthusiasts were present at the ceremony.
