Guwahati, 02 October (HS): A massive landslide hit the Jorabat area on the outskirts of Guwahati early Friday, damaging a petrol pump near the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) and two vehicles, including a bus.

The landslip occurred around 3 am near the 10th Mile locality when a portion of the hillside behind the fuel station collapsed. The falling earth and debris buried part of the petrol pump and damaged two vehicles parked in the vicinity.

No injuries or casualties have been reported in the incident so far.

The landslide triggered panic among local residents as soil and debris reportedly continued sliding down the slope even after the initial collapse. The incident also raised concerns over the safety of the fuel station and nearby settlements.

Residents alleged that extensive earth-cutting activities on the hillside for construction purposes may have weakened the slope and contributed to the landslide. They called for an assessment of the area to prevent any further damage.

Further details regarding the extent of the damage and the cause of the landslide are awaited.-----------
