Barpeta (Assam), 02 October (HS): Tension prevailed at Barpeta District Jail in Assam on Friday following a violent confrontation between inmates and jail authorities, during which three rounds were reportedly fired into the air to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Preliminary information suggests that the trouble started after a group of inmates allegedly protested against the conduct of Assistant Jailor Kishor Haloi. The situation subsequently turned violent, with some inmates reportedly assaulting Haloi and attempting to force their way past the second security gate inside the jail complex.

Jail authorities allegedly fired three rounds in the air as the inmates tried to breach the internal gate. The firing was reportedly aimed at controlling the situation and preventing further escalation.

Barpeta Deputy Commissioner Navdeep Pathak later reached the jail along with police personnel to take stock of the situation. Security arrangements around the jail have been strengthened, while entry to the premises has been restricted.

Officials have not yet confirmed the exact circumstances leading to the clash, the number of inmates involved or whether anyone sustained injuries. Further details are awaited from the district administration and jail authorities.-----------
