Thoubal (Manipur), 19 October (HS): One person was killed and at least three others injured after a clash between members of the Meitei and Meitei Pangal communities erupted in Manipur’s Thoubal district late Sunday night. The violence, reported from Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham villages, also resulted in the burning of several houses and vehicles, following which the district administration imposed prohibitory orders and strengthened security.
The deceased has been identified as Laishram Rakesh, 24, who reportedly suffered pellet gun injuries after being fired upon by unidentified miscreants. He later succumbed to his injuries, sources said.
According to preliminary reports, the incident began around 11.30 pm on Sunday when a group allegedly started pelting stones at a ground in Khangabok village, under Thoubal police station, where a concert was underway. The situation subsequently escalated into a confrontation between members of the two communities, with at least three people sustaining injuries.
The administration imposed prohibitory restrictions in the affected areas from 11 pm on Sunday to prevent further violence. Additional state and central security personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.
Although the situation was reported to be under control by Monday morning, security forces remained deployed in the area as a precautionary measure. Further details regarding the circumstances that triggered the clash and those involved were awaited.------------
