New Delhi, 19 October (H.S.): Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday reviewed the functioning of the Directorate of Prosecution and expressed concern over low conviction rates, the growing backlog of cases and delays in their disposal. He issued a series of directives to address these issues, according to information shared on the social media platform X.
The Lieutenant Governor called for stronger monitoring mechanisms, improved case tracking, streamlined file allocation and the identification of factors contributing to delays in trials. He also directed the authorities to ensure timely justice, enforce the timelines prescribed under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and hold investigating officers accountable for the quality of investigations and the collection of evidence. He further stressed the need to analyse acquittal cases, identify lapses and ensure accountability at every stage of the judicial process.
Sandhu also called for better coordination among the agencies concerned, directing that daily coordination between prosecutors, the Delhi Police and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) be strengthened. He instructed officials to improve the pre-trial scrutiny of charge sheets, reduce adjournments and ensure the timely appearance of witnesses.
The Lieutenant Governor said every avoidable delay and lapse in the delivery of justice must be eliminated. He directed all concerned agencies to work with promptness, coordination and accountability to strengthen the prosecution system and ensure more effective delivery of justice.
