Thiruvananthapuram, 19 Oct (H.S.): Heavy rain is likely to continue across Kerala until Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, issuing yellow alerts for several districts. Authorities have also warned coastal communities in Thiruvananthapuram and neighbouring Kanyakumari of possible sea incursions caused by high waves.
Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad and Kannur are under a yellow alert on Monday, October 19, with isolated heavy rainfall forecast.
On Tuesday, the warning will cover seven southern and central districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki.
Wednesday’s yellow alert extends to all districts except Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. On Thursday, all districts except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam will remain under a heavy rain warning.
The forecast indicates the possibility of isolated heavy showers rather than uniformly intense rainfall across the districts covered by the alerts. The IMD classifies rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours as heavy.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a coastal warning linked to the “kallakkadal” phenomenon, involving swell waves that can cause seawater to surge inland.
Along the Thiruvananthapuram coastline, between Kappil and Pozhiyoor, waves measuring 0.8 to 1.3 metres could trigger sea incursions from 2.30 p.m. on Monday until 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday.
A similar warning has been issued for the Kanyakumari coast, where waves ranging from 1.2 to 1.4 metres are expected between 8.30 a.m. on Monday and 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Fishermen and coastal residents have been urged to remain vigilant because of the possibility of seawater entering vulnerable coastal stretches.
The coastal advisories overlap with the rainfall warnings, requiring particular attention in Thiruvananthapuram, where a yellow alert is also in place for Tuesday. Residents should closely follow official weather bulletins and coastal warnings as the alerts cover different districts and time periods through Thursday.
