New Delhi, 19 October (H.S.): Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Northeast staged a protest in Delhi on Monday, marching from the Andhra School traffic signal on Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg towards the Congress headquarters. The protesters demanded the expulsion of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from the party in connection with allegations of sexual harassment involving female students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
The protest was led by Yogita Singh, general secretary of the Delhi BJP. C.L. Meena, president of the Delhi BJP’s Scheduled Tribe Morcha, was also present.
Singh said people from the Northeast had gathered to stage a symbolic protest and press for their demands. She claimed that 11 young women had filed complaints at JNU and that the university had taken action in the matter.
Singh alleged that the Congress had maintained silence on the issue because of its close association with MP Akoijam. She said double standards in dealing with the matter could not be accepted.
The protest was held in connection with allegations of sexual harassment involving female students at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
