New Delhi, 19 October (H.S.): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Punjab is highly significant in the fight against gangster networks operating in the state and the drug supply chains distributing narcotics across the region.

Ahead of Amit Shah’s visit to Punjab, Tarun Chugh, the BJP’s in-charge of the party’s central headquarters and a Rajya Sabha member, launched a sharp attack on the state’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government while speaking to journalists at his residence on Monday. He expressed concern over the drug problem in Punjab, trafficking networks, the deteriorating law-and-order situation and the alleged killings of people who have raised their voices against drugs.

Chugh said the widespread availability of drugs on the streets of Punjab, the presence of trafficking networks and the deteriorating law-and-order situation raised serious questions about the state’s current circumstances. He alleged that incidents involving the public killing of people who speak out against drugs had further heightened concerns. According to him, Amit Shah’s visit would prove significant in taking action against these criminal networks.

The BJP leader said the Modi government had resolved to make Punjab drug-free by December 31, 2029. He claimed that the people of Punjab were now placing greater faith in the deadline set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi than in the promises made by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Chugh said the state government must explain what steps it had taken so far to curb the drug problem. He added that the government must also clarify its accountability regarding the deteriorating law-and-order situation and the problems faced by ordinary citizens.
