Akhil Gogoi-Led Panel Seeks Supplementary Chargesheet in Zubeen Garg Death Case

Guwahati, October 17 (H.S.): A public meeting held at Zubeen Kshetra on Saturday under the leadership of Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi called on the Assam government to file a supplementary chargesheet in the death case of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. The meeting also announced a 21-member convening committee to coordinate legal action and mobilise public support for justice.

The gathering adopted three key resolutions: seeking additional evidence through a supplementary chargesheet without withdrawing the existing one, exploring legal remedies to challenge bail granted to the accused, and opposing pending bail applications. Gogoi said the committee would pursue these objectives through legal representations and sustained public engagement, including peaceful demonstrations if necessary.

A separate legal cell, to be led by Dulu Ahmed, will examine the case and identify possible legal avenues. Gogoi maintained that the campaign was not affiliated with any particular political party and claimed that Garima Saikia Garg, the singer’s wife, supported the initiative.

The meeting followed recent developments in the case. On October 16, the Gauhati High Court granted bail to suspended Assam Police Deputy Superintendent of Police Sandipon Garg, one of the accused. The court had also granted bail to Amritprava Mahanta on October 9. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has scheduled further consideration of accused Shyamkanu Mahanta’s bail plea for November 4.

The newly formed committee is expected to coordinate legal efforts and public awareness initiatives as proceedings in the case continue.
