NLSIU expansion gets Karnataka govt support as CJI stresses infra needs
Chief Justice Suryakant

Bengaluru, 17 Oct (H.S.): Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday stressed the need to expand infrastructure at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), saying its growing student population required additional facilities to sustain academic excellence.

Presiding over the university’s 34th annual convocation in Bengaluru, he said student numbers had increased considerably over the past two years, making investment in infrastructure essential.

Providing students with adequate facilities was a responsibility, he said, adding that improved infrastructure would help the institution continue attracting outstanding talent and strengthen its standing among the country’s leading national law universities.

The Chief Justice congratulated the university’s governing bodies and management team and thanked the Karnataka government for providing seven acres of valuable land for expansion.

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting NLSIU’s development, describing the institution as a source of pride for Karnataka.

Recalling the establishment of the country’s first national law school in Bengaluru, he said Karnataka had played a pioneering role in advancing legal education despite differing views across the country.

Shivakumar congratulated the Vice-Chancellor and his team, saying the government had a duty to protect and nurture the university.

“Do not worry about seven acres or ten acres. The government is committed to providing what you need,” he said.

He also referred to a proposal for a new building following a request from the Chief Justice. Acknowledging the historical significance of the existing premises, he said the proposal was progressing and a Cabinet decision was expected within the month.

The proposed university facilities include student hostels and faculty accommodation, with construction plans and designs discussed at meetings of its executive and governing bodies.

Speakers expressed confidence that the expansion would strengthen the campus and help nurture future leaders committed to protecting democracy, respecting the law and serving the country.
