Kolkata, 17 October (H.S.): In a bid to ensure peace, security, and smooth traffic management during the ongoing Durga Puja festivities, the Kolkata Police launched an intensive city-wide checking drive on the night of Maha Sasthi. The special operation conducted on Friday night led to a massive crackdown on lawbreakers and traffic rule violators across the metropolis.

According to official data released by the police administration, swift action carried out across various divisions resulted in the arrest of 65 individuals. In addition, to curb intoxication and illegal activities during the festive season, police teams conducted thorough searches and seized 2.4 liters of illicit liquor.

Prioritizing the safety of citizens on the roads amidst the festive rush, the traffic department adopted a stringent stance against rule-breakers, recording a total of 495 prosecutions. The highest number of offenses was for triple riding on two-wheelers, which accounted for 189 cases. Furthermore, 85 vehicles were impounded for serious violations of the Motor Vehicles Act and other regulations.

The traffic police also issued 65 challans for rash and dangerous driving, while strict legal action was taken against 61 individuals for drunk driving. Another 95 challans were issued for miscellaneous traffic rule violations. However, in a positive development, not a single case of riding without a helmet was recorded during the entire drive.

The Kolkata Police administration has issued a stern warning that there will be no compromise on law and order during the puja celebrations. The rigorous campaign against drunk revelers, miscreants, and those ignoring road safety standards will continue with full vigilance for the remainder of the festival.
