Hojai (Assam), October 17 (H.S.): The district administration in Assam is preparing to resume its eviction drive against alleged illegal encroachments in the Yamuna Modanga Reserved Forest in Dabka on Saturday.
In January this year, the Hojai district administration conducted a large-scale eviction drive in the protected forest area, evicting 1,098 families and clearing approximately 700 hectares of land. However, 152 families residing in the forest area approached the Gauhati High Court, following which they were granted temporary relief.
Subsequently, the Gauhati High Court directed the 152 families to vacate the land within 30 days. According to the report, nearly three months have passed since then, and the administration is now preparing to resume the eviction operation.
The drive is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m. on Saturday, with plans to demolish 152 houses in the Yamuna Modanga Reserved Forest and clear approximately 525 bighas of forest land.
To carry out the operation, the Forest Department has arranged 12 excavators (JCB machines), along with more than 300 personnel from the police and paramilitary forces.
