Guwahati, October 17 (H.S.): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday claimed that the state has secured the top position in the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to the National Crime and Criminal Intelligence System (NCLIS) dashboard of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

In a post on the social media platform X, CM Sarma said the state’s policing system prioritises strict enforcement of the law, swift action against crime and the protection of citizens.

“When it comes to combating crime, Assam works with utmost seriousness. Our policing focuses on strict enforcement of the law, prompt action and ensuring the safety of every citizen,” the Chief Minister wrote.

CM Sarma reiterated that, according to the Union Home Ministry’s dashboard, Assam ranks first in the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) with effect from July 1, 2024, as part of a comprehensive overhaul of India’s criminal laws. The new legislation forms part of the broader effort to modernise the country’s legal framework and reform its criminal justice system.
