New Delhi, 16 October (H.S.): The Supreme Court on Friday declined to intervene to stop a protest scheduled to be held by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in Delhi’s Connaught Place, observing that the Delhi High Court had already passed an order in the matter.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the High Court had already dealt with the issue.

Advocate Anant Dehadrai mentioned the matter before the bench headed by the Chief Justice, seeking a stay on the CJP protest. He argued that the demonstration would cause substantial losses to shopkeepers in the area.

In response, the Chief Justice expressed hope that everyone would act sensibly. He observed that people running small shops depended on their daily earnings for their livelihoods and noted that the Supreme Court understood the difficulties and hardships entire families could face under such circumstances.

During the mentioning, Justice Joymalya Bagchi remarked that some people wanted to protest, others needed to sell peanuts, while the authorities had to maintain law and order. He observed that all these considerations were interconnected.

Justice Bagchi added that if businesses suffered losses as a result, the Supreme Court would exercise its constitutional powers. However, he said the immediate course was to wait and see how the situation unfolded.
