New Delhi, October 16 (H.S.): The Supreme Court has stayed, until further orders, the trial proceedings before a Bhopal sessions court in the case concerning the death of Noida-based model and actress Twisha Sharma at her marital home in Bhopal. The order was passed while hearing a transfer petition filed by Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, who is the complainant in the case.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant directed the concerned trial court in Bhopal to decide the bail applications of the petitioners within two weeks.
Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, was married to Bhopal-based lawyer Samarth Singh. The two had met through a dating application. Just five months after their marriage, on May 12, Twisha was found hanging at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal.
Following her death, Twisha’s family accused her husband and in-laws of subjecting her to persistent domestic violence and harassing her over demands for dowry.
Subsequently, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the Katara Hills police station in Bhopal under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
Twisha’s mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, who was arrested in connection with the case, had previously served as the chairperson of a District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Madhya Pradesh.
