Tinsukia (Assam), 16 October (HS): Amid the widespread enthusiasm for Durga Puja across Assam, the historic Digboi Ramleela Festival Committee is organising its annual Ramleela festival at the playground of the Digboi Refinery in Tinsukia district.
Committee office-bearers said on Friday that the festival began on Panchami and will conclude on Dashami with the burning of an effigy of Ravana, symbolising the victory of good over evil.
The initiative to organise the Ramleela festival in Digboi was taken by committee president Vinod Choubey. The festival stage was inaugurated on Panchami by Suren Phukan, MLA of the Digboi Assembly constituency.
A large number of people from Digboi and neighbouring areas are visiting the venue to witness the traditional enactment of episodes from the Ramayana.
Although Durga Puja is celebrated with great enthusiasm across Assam, Ramleela performances are organised only in a few selected parts of the state. The annual event in Digboi continues to attract devotees and spectators, preserving the tradition of staging the epic story of Lord Rama.-----------
