Leh, 16 October (H.S.): Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena on Friday announced the creation of Sankoo district, describing it as the fulfilment of a long-standing aspiration of the people of the area.
In a post on X, Saxena said the decision was in line with the Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah.
This is a culmination of the long-standing aspiration of the people of the area, the Lieutenant Governor said.
With the creation of Sankoo district, Ladakh will now have eight districts, up from the existing seven.
LG credited the constructive approach of Anjuman-e-Sahib Zaman and the efforts of its Chief Patron Syed Mohammad Razvi, popularly known as Aga Migi Outh, and Chairman Sheikh Sadiq Balaghi for helping realise the demand.
Saxena also acknowledged the contributions of Kargil Chief Executive Councillor Dr Jaffar Akhoon, Ladakh MP Haneefa Jan and former Leh CEC Tashi Gyalson towards the creation of the district.
He congratulated all those who worked towards achieving the goal.
The announcement comes amid the expansion of Ladakh's district administrative structure. In 2024, the Centre approved the creation of five new districts in the union Territory. The formal notification for the five districts was issued on April 27.
