New Delhi, 15 October (H.S.): A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) women MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday and submitted a memorandum concerning Congress MP Bimol Akoijam, who has been accused in an alleged sexual harassment case involving Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

According to BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, the meeting with the Lok Sabha Speaker was constructive. The delegation presented its concerns regarding women’s safety, the seriousness with which complaints of sexual harassment should be handled, and the need for appropriate institutional action in the matter.

Bansuri Swaraj said the delegation, led by Rupkumari Choudhary, national president of the BJP Mahila Morcha and a Member of Parliament, met Birla to raise the issue and submit a memorandum seeking necessary action.

The BJP has questioned the Congress leadership’s commitment to women’s safety in light of the allegations. Following the meeting, the women MPs addressed journalists at the party headquarters.

Bansuri Swaraj alleged that the Congress, which frequently speaks about women’s rights, should adopt a clear position in such cases and ensure accountability when allegations involve its leaders.

She further accused the Congress of repeatedly siding with those accused of exploiting women. She also questioned the silence of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi on the matter.

According to Bansuri Swaraj, Akoijam faced allegations of sexually harassing 11 female students. She claimed that JNU’s internal committee had found the complaints submitted by the students to be substantiated and that the allegations had been confirmed on the basis of the available evidence. She further stated that Akoijam was removed from his position at JNU on October 9, 2026.

The BJP MP described the Congress leadership’s silence on the matter as deeply unfortunate. She questioned why Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, who frequently speak about women’s rights and safety, had not publicly responded to the allegations.

It is noteworthy that the BJP women MPs’ delegation had also appealed to President Droupadi Murmu regarding the matter. A day earlier, the delegation had met National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar to discuss the case.

The allegations and claims concerning the internal committee’s findings and the action reportedly taken against Akoijam are attributed to the BJP delegation and Bansuri Swaraj.
