New Delhi, 14 October (H.S.): Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman departed on Wednesday for a four-day official visit to Thailand, where she will participate in the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group, along with meetings of G20 and G7 finance ministers and central bank governors.
According to the Ministry of Finance, Sitharaman is visiting Bangkok from October 14 to 18 to participate in a series of high-level multilateral engagements and discussions on key global economic and financial issues. The deliberations will cover the global economic outlook, development priorities and matters concerning the financial sector.
During the visit, Sitharaman is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas, as well as the finance ministers of Switzerland, Japan, Luxembourg and Bhutan. She will additionally meet IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and the Governor of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).
The Finance Ministry said Sitharaman would participate in a discussion organised by the Atlantic Council. The deliberations will focus on India’s economic growth prospects, strengthening trade and expanding global outreach, reforming the international financial architecture, India-ASEAN relations, and the country’s progress towards achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
She will also attend a separate event hosted by Germany on the theme, “Working Together to Make Cities Investable: Mobilising Private Capital for Urban and Water Infrastructure.” The discussion will explore ways to attract private investment to urban development and water infrastructure through greater cooperation.
According to the ministry, these engagements will provide India with an opportunity to highlight its economic performance, reform priorities and investment potential while strengthening cooperation and dialogue with international partners on pressing global economic and financial challenges.
The visit also reflects India’s continued engagement with multilateral institutions and its efforts to promote international cooperation on key economic and financial issues. Through bilateral discussions and multilateral forums, Sitharaman is expected to advance dialogue on shared development priorities, investment opportunities and the challenges facing the global economy.
