Thrissur, 14 Oct (H.S.):The father of a youth who died by suicide in Kodungallur has alleged that police assault and a fabricated criminal case drove his son to take his life, and demanded action against the officers involved.
In a Facebook post, Noushad accused the Kodungallur Janamaithri police of illegally detaining and assaulting his sons, Mohammed Aslam and Sahal. Aslam, described in the account as 18, was found dead at his home on October 6.
According to Noushad, Aslam was in a relationship with a girl whose family opposed it. He alleged that her relatives influenced the police to take both brothers into custody and implicate them in a false case of obtaining gold and money from her through threats.
Noushad claimed that officers brutally assaulted Aslam at the police station, prompting his elder brother Sahal to admit to the allegations to stop the assault.
He alleged that the brothers were held for three days before being produced before the appropriate judicial authorities. Aslam was presented before the Juvenile Justice Board on September 29 and granted bail on October 4, he said. Sahal remains in judicial custody.
The account describes Aslam as both 18 and a minor, leaving his age at the time of the alleged offence unclear.
Noushad also disputed the police’s purported claim that an Innova car shown in a photograph had been purchased using the allegedly extorted valuables. He said the vehicle belonged to the sister of his son’s friend.
Naming Circle Inspector Baiju and Sub-Inspector Athul Mohan, Noushad demanded legal action and questioned whether investigators had gathered scientific evidence rather than relying on an alleged confession.
He further alleged that police had not recorded his statement following Aslam’s death. The supplied account contains no police response to the allegations. The claims have not been independently verified.
