Guwahati, 13 October (HS): Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Tuesday called for stronger disaster preparedness, effective coordination among emergency response agencies and greater public awareness to build a disaster-resilient India. He said the principles of Samanvay (coordination), Suraksha (security) and Samvedna (compassion) were essential for protecting lives and strengthening society.
The Governor was addressing a programme organised by Lok Bhavan, Assam, in association with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) under the Namo Matribhoomi Suraksha avam Swavalamban Sankalp Saptah, focusing on emergency response and disaster management.
Acharya said the CRPF and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) exemplified the spirit of “Nation First, Public Service Above All”. While security forces play a vital role in maintaining internal security and law and order, disaster response teams work to rescue people and provide relief during emergencies. He congratulated the CRPF, NDRF and other agencies for their commitment to public service and paid tribute to personnel who had made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation.
Highlighting Assam’s vulnerability to natural calamities, the Governor said earthquakes, floods and landslides required robust preparedness and swift, coordinated action. Recalling the recent floods in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts, he appreciated the efforts of the NDRF, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police and other agencies in rescue and relief operations.
He emphasised that disaster management must begin well before a crisis and called for regular mock drills, public awareness campaigns and better coordination among emergency response agencies. He also urged educational institutions to promote disaster preparedness and community service among students.
The Governor lauded the CRPF’s courage, discipline and professionalism, particularly appreciating the contributions of its women personnel. He also highlighted the force’s participation in international missions, which has contributed to India’s peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts.
Acharya urged young people to use their knowledge and skills in science, technology, innovation and social service for nation-building, stressing that preparedness, responsibility and compassion were crucial to building a secure and self-reliant India.
The programme featured an NDRF disaster management mock drill demonstrating emergency response procedures and coordinated rescue operations. The Governor also visited exhibition stalls showcasing the NDRF’s equipment, rescue tools and disaster management capabilities. He interacted with participating students and encouraged them to develop awareness of emergency response and their responsibilities towards society.
Among those present were CRPF Deputy Inspector General, Guwahati, Mohammad Jamal Khan; Commandant of the 128th Battalion, CRPF, Yatindranath Rai; Deputy Commissioner of Police, Guwahati Central, Shambhavi Mishra; Chief General Manager of Guwahati Refinery, Arup Lashkar; senior CRPF officers, personnel, students and other dignitaries.-------------
