Palakkad, 13 Oct (H.S.):
The parents of Gopika, one of three people killed in a Mini Cooper crash at Nedumbassery, have alleged attempts to derail the investigation and expressed fears that the accused’s family could use its wealth and influence to obstruct justice.
Speaking to reporters, her father Pradeep questioned the handling of the case against Suhail Sajeev, including his placement in a juvenile home. He alleged lapses by the police and said reports of pressure on investigators had deepened the family’s concerns.
“We fear that our daughter will be denied justice,” Gopika’s mother said, breaking down as she spoke about the loss.
Pradeep claimed that the accused and his family belonged to the Home Minister’s constituency and could use political connections to influence the proceedings. He also alleged that Suhail had said after the crash that his father would take care of everything.
The family questioned whether suspected alcohol consumption had been properly recorded in the initial First Information Report. Pradeep said he had learnt that the FIR did not mention that Suhail had consumed alcohol, despite what he described as indications of intoxication.
According to Pradeep, relatives who reached Nedumbassery police station around 6.45 a.m. saw Suhail lying in the lock-up. He claimed they heard the Circle Inspector remark that the accused was still heavily intoxicated while attempting to wake him.
Pradeep also sought an explanation for the collection of a blood sample from Gopika’s body after the post-mortem examination. He alleged that sutures had been reopened for the procedure and said the family had doubts about why it was necessary.
The parents further alleged that a social media campaign was maligning Gopika and their family. Pradeep said his daughter had been vice-chairperson of KMM College and a National Service Scheme volunteer for about five years.
“She was involved in social service. People can enquire in our locality about our family,” he said, alleging that the online attacks were intended to discredit them. He accused political leaders of being behind the campaign and urged them to show restraint and respect for the bereaved family.
Pradeep said he supported the household by driving an autorickshaw, while Gopika’s mother worked at a rubber shop. The financial disparity between the two families, he said, had added to their fear that they might struggle to secure justice.
The allegations of interference, investigative lapses and intoxication remain the family’s claims. A response from the police, the accused’s family or the political figures referred to was not available in the material provided.
