New Delhi, 13 October (H.S.): The Executive Council of the University of Delhi (DU), at its 1,284th meeting, approved a proposal to develop residential facilities for 21,895 students at an estimated cost of Rs 5,889 crore.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh said at the meeting held on Tuesday that the buildings had been designed to meet the requirements of the 21st century. He added that the university’s new residential facilities would be developed with a long-term vision, keeping the needs of the next 100 years in mind.
According to the proposal approved by the Executive Council, new hostels will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 4,027 crore, providing additional accommodation for 15,758 students. In addition, the council approved the redevelopment of two existing hostels at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 1,862 crore, which will provide residential facilities for 6,137 students.
The Vice-Chancellor said it had been decided to construct additional multi-storey hostel buildings at the university’s Dhaka Complex, Surajmal Vihar Campus and Najafgarh Campus.
Apart from constructing new hostels, the council also approved proposals for the redevelopment of Jubilee Hall and the PG Men’s Hostel.
In view of the limited availability of land for construction on the university campus, it was further decided that each hostel block would be designed to make full use of the maximum permissible Floor Area Ratio (FAR) allocated to the respective premises.
The proposed hostel blocks will also include dining halls, shops, common rooms, reading rooms and residential accommodation for wardens, along with other essential facilities.
According to the proposal passed at the meeting, hostels will be constructed at the Dhaka Complex, as well as at Veer Savarkar College in Roshanpura, Najafgarh; the university’s West Campus in Dwarka, Najafgarh; and the university’s East Campus in Surajmal Vihar, Karkardooma. These facilities will accommodate both male and female students.
The Executive Council also appealed to all colleges affiliated with the university to prepare proposals for constructing new hostels on their respective campuses and submit them to the relevant funding agencies.
