New Delhi, 13 October (H.S.): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stepped up its criticism of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual harassment involving female students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). In connection with the matter, a delegation of BJP women MPs is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday to raise the issue, according to a party leader.
According to sources, the delegation is expected to bring the matter to the President's attention and seek appropriate action. Earlier, on October 12, the BJP Mahila Morcha staged a protest outside the Congress headquarters in New Delhi over the allegations.
Akoijam represents the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency in the Lok Sabha and has also served as a professor at JNU. Several female students at the university reportedly filed complaints against him alleging sexual harassment. The complaints were examined by the university's Internal Committee, following which JNU dismissed him from service on October 9.
Delhi Police also registered a First Information Report (FIR) on October 11, based on a complaint received in connection with the matter.
Akoijam has denied the allegations and raised questions about the university's inquiry process. The allegations and the subsequent action by the university have triggered a political controversy, with the BJP demanding accountability and action in the case.
The proposed meeting with President Murmu is aimed at bringing the matter before the country's highest constitutional authority. It comes amid escalating political exchanges between the BJP and the Congress over the allegations and the action taken by the university.
