Guwahati, 13 October (HS): The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday launched a statewide 'Jan Jagaran Rally' from Nalbari, accusing the Congress and the INDIA bloc of attempting to create political instability through protests, political provocation and baseless allegations against the judiciary and constitutional institutions. The campaign will continue across the state until October 31.
According to a press statement issued by BJP Assam Pradesh panelist Dharmakanta Gogoi, the inaugural rally in Nalbari was attended by state BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia, state organisational general secretary Ravindra Raju, minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, senior leader Chandra Mohan Patowary, MLA Narayan Deka and thousands of party workers and youths.
The primary objective of the campaign is to counter what the BJP described as Congress's misinformation and attempts to create political instability over the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Gogoi said an accurate and error-free electoral roll was essential for protecting democracy, strengthening constitutional institutions and ensuring respect for the people's mandate.
Announcing the next phase of the programme, he said the rally would be organised in Guwahati on October 14 before being extended to various parts of Assam, including Silchar, Tezpur, Barpeta, Jorhat and Dibrugarh, in phases until October 31.
Criticising the Congress over what he termed its inconsistent stand on election results, Gogoi questioned why the party raised doubts about the Election Commission after electoral defeats while accepting the electoral process when it secured victories.
He cited the formation of Congress-led alliance governments in Jharkhand, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, its performance in Maharashtra and Haryana, and the Congress governments in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. He also referred to the party winning 99 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, arguing that the neutrality of the Election Commission had not been questioned in the same manner on those occasions.
Gogoi said the Jan Jagaran Rally would convey the message of electoral transparency, institutional credibility and democratic accountability across Assam. He added that the BJP remained committed to promoting peace, unity and uninterrupted development while opposing forces that, according to the party, sought to obstruct the country's progress.------------
