Rajkot, 12 October (H.S.): Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja scored his 16th first-class century for Saurashtra on Monday, reaching the milestone on the second day of their Ranji Trophy encounter against Chhattisgarh. Jadeja struck 102 at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot before being dismissed by Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, who took the catch off his own bowling.
The left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder’s century is considered valuable preparation ahead of India’s upcoming international assignments. His most recent red-ball appearance had come during the Test series against Sri Lanka.
Besides Jadeja’s century, Prerak Mankad produced an impressive knock of 129, while Chirag Jani contributed 83 runs. Their substantial contributions helped Saurashtra post 392 all out in their first innings. In reply, Chhattisgarh had reached 24 for one at the time of filing this report.
Jadeja Joins Saurashtra After India’s ODI Series Win Over West Indies
Jadeja joined the Saurashtra squad following India’s 2-1 ODI series victory over the West Indies. He featured in two matches during the series but did not get an opportunity to bat, although he claimed two wickets.
His century against Chhattisgarh has therefore provided him with valuable batting practice in red-ball cricket as he looks to regain his rhythm ahead of India’s forthcoming Test assignments.
India are scheduled to tour New Zealand next month for a two-match Test series. The opening Test is scheduled to be played in Wellington from November 19 to 23, followed by the second Test in Christchurch from November 27 to December 1. Jadeja will be keen to carry his domestic form into the tour.
92nd Edition of the Ranji Trophy Begins on October 11
The 92nd edition of the Ranji Trophy, India’s premier domestic first-class cricket competition, began on October 11.
Saurashtra, who were eliminated in the early stages of the previous season, have been placed in Elite Group B this time. The group comprises Andhra, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Hyderabad, Karnataka, Punjab, Saurashtra and Tripura.
Jadeja’s century will be an encouraging sign for Saurashtra as they seek a strong campaign in the country’s premier domestic red-ball tournament.
