Bengaluru, 11 Oct (H.S.):

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s claim that attempts have been made to target him through sting operations has triggered a political controversy, amid allegations of mass applications seeking the deletion of names from electoral rolls.

The controversy comes as Congress raises concerns over voter removals during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Allegations that large numbers of Form 7 applications have been submitted to seek deletions have intensified the political debate over the exercise.

At a Cabinet meeting earlier this week, Shivakumar advised ministers to remain alert to possible sting operations. He subsequently claimed that attempts had been made to target him, that he possessed evidence and that he knew the person behind the alleged effort.

His remarks have prompted questions about the nature of the alleged operation, the evidence available and whether the government intends to initiate action. The account provided does not specify who allegedly orchestrated the attempt.

The warning appears to reflect concern within the government about attempts to damage its reputation. By cautioning ministers, Shivakumar has also brought renewed attention to the use of covert recordings in Karnataka’s political battles.

Sting operations, pen drives and CDs have repeatedly generated controversy in the state in recent years. The Chief Minister’s public assertion has added another dimension to that debate, particularly as Congress seeks to mobilise public opinion over alleged voter disenfranchisement.

Meanwhile, opposition parties are confronting the government over several issues, including alleged irregularities involving Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises (NICE) in implementing the Bengaluru–Mysuru Infrastructure Corridor project. These allegations have also drawn Shivakumar into the political dispute.

The competing controversies unfold as farmers affected by severe drought await substantial financial assistance from the state government. Their demands place additional pressure on the administration to address immediate rural distress while responding to the widening confrontation with its political opponents.
