New Delhi, 11 October (H.S.):
The Delhi Police have taken action on their own initiative after a video went viral on social media showing four people allegedly assaulting a teenage protester during a demonstration on DDU Marg on Saturday, under the jurisdiction of the Kamla Market Police Station.
The Delhi Police said that all four accused had been identified and traced, and further legal proceedings were underway. No formal complaint had been lodged by the victim in connection with the incident.
In a statement, the police said, “A video circulating on social media purportedly shows four individuals assaulting a male protester. Taking suo motu cognisance of the video, the Delhi Police, through the Kamla Market Police Station, acted promptly and initiated legal proceedings. All four accused have been identified and traced. Further legal action is underway.”
The police further stated that they remained committed to taking appropriate action against incidents of violence and ensuring the prompt resolution of such complaints.
It may be noted that opposition parties, several student organisations and their supporters have been staging protests over the past several days, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
