Thiruvananthapuram, 11 Oct (H.S.):Kerala is likely to receive light to moderate rain until Wednesday as a cyclonic circulation over the Strait of Malacca is expected to develop into a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal by Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department said.
The weather system is forecast to move into the Andaman Sea by Sunday before intensifying further. Its influence is expected to bring rainfall across Kerala over the coming days, according to the department’s forecast.
The department also warned of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour. Residents have been advised to remain alert during spells of rain, particularly when lightning and gusty winds occur together.
The forecast points to the presence of another cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and the adjoining southern Tamil Nadu coast. This system lies at an altitude of 0.9 kilometres above mean sea level.
A trough extending from this circulation towards central and northern Maharashtra passes through interior Tamil Nadu and interior Karnataka, the department said. The trough forms part of the broader weather pattern described in its advisory.
While light to moderate rainfall is expected in Kerala until Wednesday, the warning highlights the possibility of locally disruptive conditions during thunderstorms. Strong gusts may accompany rain at isolated places, making caution necessary even where rainfall is relatively limited.
The projected formation of the low pressure area is a forecast, with the circulation expected to strengthen after entering the Andaman Sea. The department’s advisory outlines the anticipated movement and development of the system over the next few days.
Residents should keep track of subsequent weather bulletins for updates on rainfall, thunderstorms and wind conditions. The advisory calls for vigilance as the two cyclonic circulations and the associated trough influence weather conditions across the region.
