Shanghai, 10 October (H.S.): Russia’s Daniil Medvedev returned to winning ways in his first match since being disqualified in the semi-finals of the China Open, defeating Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets to advance to the third round of the Shanghai Masters on Saturday.
The fifth-seeded Medvedev overcame Struff 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a contest lasting one hour and 52 minutes.
Ranked eighth in the world, Medvedev fired 21 aces during the match and improved his head-to-head record against Struff to 10-2.
“When I broke his serve, I felt that I could win the match,” Medvedev said.
He raised his level considerably in the deciding set. A superb backhand volley in the sixth game gave him a 4-2 lead, putting him firmly on course to seal the victory.
Medvedev also spoke about the playing conditions, explaining that the courts in Shanghai were different from those in Beijing and that adjusting to the change had been somewhat challenging.
