Hooghly, 10 October (H.S.): A large number of devotees gathered at various ghats along the River Ganga in Hooghly district on Mahalaya morning to perform *Tarpan*, a traditional ritual of offering water to departed ancestors and praying for the peace of their souls.

Mahalaya marks the end of Pitru Paksha and the beginning of Devipaksha, heralding the arrival of Goddess Durga. On this auspicious occasion, devotees offered prayers and water to their deceased forefathers, seeking peace and blessings for their ancestors.

The Mayurpankhi Ghat, Joraghat and Bakultala Ghat in Chinsurah witnessed an overwhelming gathering of devotees from the early morning hours. Priests were seen chanting Vedic mantras as people performed Tarpan rituals along the riverbank.

### Security Arrangements Strengthened

In view of the heavy rush, the police administration and disaster management personnel have been deployed at the ghats to ensure the safety of devotees.

As there is a possibility of high tide, police personnel are making announcements over loudspeakers, advising people not to venture into deep water. Speedboats are also being used to maintain surveillance along the river and prevent any untoward incidents.

The Ganga ghats of Hooghly witnessed an atmosphere of deep religious faith and devotion as thousands of people gathered to observe the sacred Mahalaya tradition.
