New Delhi, 10 October (H.S.): The Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Mahila Morcha staged a protest on Saturday over allegations of sexual harassment involving female students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The protesters demanded the expulsion from the Congress party and the arrest of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam in connection with the case.

The protesters were marching from Laxmi Nagar Metro Station towards the Congress headquarters when Delhi Police detained them and took them to Shakarpur Police Station.

The demonstration was organised under the leadership of Sangeeta Yadav, national secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha and a Rajya Sabha member, and Yogita Singh, general secretary of the Delhi BJP. Sarika Jain, state vice-president of the Delhi BJP, Mahila Morcha president Archana Gupta and in-charge Aarti Mehra were among those who participated, along with a large number of party workers.

The demonstrators assembled near Laxmi Nagar Metro Station and raised slogans as they began marching towards the Congress headquarters on Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg. However, police personnel stopped them after they had covered a short distance and took them into custody.

Addressing the protesters, Sangeeta Yadav alleged that action should be taken against the MP concerned in connection with the alleged sexual harassment of female students at JNU. She demanded that the Congress expel him from the party and that he be arrested.

Yogita Singh also accused the Congress of failing to take appropriate action in the matter. She maintained that action against the accused was necessary to ensure the safety of women and warned that the BJP Mahila Morcha would continue its agitation until the affected students received justice.

Other participants included Mahila Morcha state office-bearers Himanshi Pandey, Meera Pahariya and Suman Lata Dagar, along with district presidents Kanchan Maheshwari and Rosie Sood, among other party workers.
