Nagoya, 01 October (H.S.): India’s Anish Bhanwala finished seventh in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol final at the Aichi Prefecture General Shooting Gallery on Thursday, bringing the country’s shooting campaign at the Asian Games to a close with a haul of 15 medals.
Indian shooters won a total of 15 medals in the competition, comprising three gold, eight silver and four bronze medals.
Bhanwala was tied with other shooters on 11 points in the final, but was eliminated on the basis of a countback due to his lower qualification ranking. He consequently finished his campaign in seventh place.
Bhanwala had finished ninth in the qualification round with a score of 576-17x, but still secured a place in the final. Three shooters from South Korea had finished among the top eight, but under the rules, a maximum of two shooters from any one country could qualify for the final. As a result, Bhanwala advanced to the final as the eighth and final qualifier.
Indian pistol shooters had a relatively modest campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, accounting for only two of India’s 15 shooting medals. India won silver in the women’s 10m air pistol and gold in the mixed team 10m air pistol event.
Meanwhile, India secured a medal in the men’s quadrant event in sepak takraw after reaching the semi-finals. India completed the group stage unbeaten and produced a thrilling comeback against Myanmar to win 2-1.
India lost the opening set 10-15 but bounced back to win the next two sets 15-13 and 15-7, finishing at the top of Group A. Earlier, India had also defeated Laos and Vietnam.
In canoe slalom, India’s Shikha Chauhan finished seventh in the women’s kayak singles final. She clocked 193.31 seconds to finish seventh among the eight finalists.
In the women’s 70kg judo quarter-final, India’s Inungnabi Takhellambam suffered an ippon defeat against North Korea’s Mun Song-hui. However, after her designated repechage opponent, China’s Jing Tang, was disqualified, Inungnabi advanced directly to the bronze-medal contest.
