Kannur, 01 Oct (H.S.):

Sports Minister O J Janeesh’s car was attacked at Taliparamba and Payyannur on Thursday while he was travelling to Kasaragod after attending programmes in Kannur, prompting condemnation from the Chief Minister’s Office.

People accompanying the minister alleged that DYFI workers stopped his vehicle at Taliparamba and pelted it with stones. They said the car’s flagpole and rain guard were damaged in the attacks. Janeesh had visited Kannur for an Archaeology Department programme.

In a statement, the CMO alleged that the attacks were carried out with the knowledge of the CPM leadership. It said those responsible, including anyone involved in planning the incidents, would face legal action.

Describing the attacks as unacceptable, the CMO alleged that there had been earlier attempts to target Janeesh’s vehicle. It compared the incidents with attacks on former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy during his tenure.

The statement accused the CPM of trying to create unrest following an “electoral setback” and alleged that criminal groups were being used to organise protests. It also questioned whether Janeesh was being targeted for leading Youth Congress protests against the BJP-led Union government and the Election Commission.

The incidents have renewed debate over protests against ministers and the responses of political parties in government and opposition.

During the previous LDF government’s Nava Kerala Sadas, KSU and Youth Congress workers waved black flags at ministers travelling on a special bus. AD Thomas, now Alappuzha MLA, was beaten by police during a protest. Then Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan defended the police action.

Former Health Minister Veena George also alleged earlier this year that KSU workers attempted to assault her at Kannur railway station. Congress denied an assault, while George reported physical discomfort and was hospitalised.

The CMO warned that the government would intervene to prevent such incidents and ensure those responsible faced legal action.
