Hooghly, 01 October (H.S.): Concerns over dengue have increased in Hooghly ahead of Durga Puja, with around 520 dengue cases reported across the district, according to district health department data. The situation in Mahanad gram panchayat area under Polba-Dadpur block has emerged as a concern, with 33 cases officially reported so far.

Local residents, however, claim that the actual number of affected people could be higher, with several people reportedly undergoing treatment for fever and dengue-like symptoms.

In view of the situation, a special health camp has been organised in Mahanad. Residents are being advised to undergo blood tests if fever persists and seek medical attention promptly if dengue symptoms appear. Mosquito nets are also being distributed, along with awareness campaigns on dengue prevention.

On Thursday, Polba-Dadpur Block Development Officer Subriti Das, along with officials from the administration and health department, visited Mahanad. Surveys were conducted to identify mosquito larvae, while insecticide was sprayed using drones, particularly in areas that are difficult for officials and workers to access directly.

According to the BDO, the Armala and Nagarpada areas under Mahanad gram panchayat have reported a higher incidence of dengue. Several preventive measures, including awareness programmes in schools, neighbourhood meetings and regular monitoring, are being carried out.

The administration has urged residents to clear stagnant water and overgrown areas around their homes and ensure that water does not accumulate. Preventive measures and monitoring are expected to continue in Mahanad ahead of Durga Puja.
