Guwahati, 01 October (HS): Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Thursday hailed the Assam Police for its legacy of courage, sacrifice and dedicated service, while calling for a modern and people-centric approach to policing.
Acharya was addressing the 75th Assam Police Day celebrations held at the 1st Assam Commando Battalion, Mandakata. He extended his greetings to police officers and personnel and paid tribute to those who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
The Governor said public trust remains the greatest strength of policing and stressed that every citizen approaching the police should feel confident of being heard. He said women must feel safe, while underprivileged sections should have the assurance that the police stand with them.
Referring to the modernisation of the Assam Police, Acharya highlighted the growing use of data analytics, cyber forensics, digital evidence, CCTV, drones, command-and-control systems and modern communication technologies in policing and security operations.
He also referred to the foundation stone laying for the new headquarters of the 10th Battalion of Assam Police by Union Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this year, describing the proposed infrastructure as an important step towards strengthening the force.
Acharya praised the Assam Police for its sustained action against narcotic substances and urged it to further intensify efforts towards creating a drug-free Assam. Referring to his ongoing Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padyatra, he called upon the police to actively contribute to the campaign against drug abuse.
Acknowledging the challenging nature of police service, the Governor urged personnel to uphold courage, sensitivity, discipline and integrity. “Make your courage your strength, make sensitivity your identity, make technology your capability, make discipline your foundation, make integrity your reputation, and make public service your highest responsibility,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the Assam Police would continue to preserve its legacy while adopting modern technology, professionalism and people-centric policing.
On the occasion, the Governor presented the President’s Medal to Additional Director General of Police Surendra Kumar, Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta, IGP Kankan Jyoti Saikia, IGP Indrani Baruah and IGP Ratna Singh.
Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, senior police officials and several other dignitaries were present at the programme.------------
