Chennai, 08 January (H.S.) : The Madras High Court has formally directed the mother of YouTuber A SHANKAR, popularly known as SAVUKKU SHANKAR, to submit her response to a petition filed by the State Police seeking the cancellation of his interim bail.
The police moved the court arguing that the liberty granted to the journalist was being misused, which could potentially hinder the ongoing investigations into multiple criminal cases registered against him.
The court has granted time for the respondent, A KAMALA, to file her counter-affidavit, outlining the defense against the state's move to revoke the relief provided to her son on medical and constitutional grounds.
Earlier, a vacation bench of the Madras High Court had granted a twelve-week interim bail to SAVUKKU SHANKAR on December 26, 2025, taking into consideration his serious cardiac condition and chronic diabetes.
The court had observed that the repeated incarceration of a single individual raised suspicions of a targeted approach by the ruling dispensation and described the frequent arrests as an abuse of the process of law.
The judges had emphasized that the right to health is an integral part of Article 21 of the Constitution and directed his release to allow him to receive necessary medical treatment. The interim bail was subject to several conditions, including the execution of a personal bond of RS 1,00,000 and a restriction on traveling abroad.
The administrative authority representing the Tamil Nadu Police stated that the interim bail should be reconsidered as the accused is involved in seventeen different criminal cases, ranging from extortion to assault.
The police contended that the grant of bail in such a large number of cases simultaneously might interfere with the collection of evidence and the fair trial process.
They further noted that the journalist’s activities following his release must be scrutinized to ensure compliance with the court’s directives.
The case has now been posted for further hearing, with the court expected to evaluate the arguments from both sides before deciding on the continuation of the interim relief.
