Srinagar, 07 January (H.S.): Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir, Qazi Irfan, today clarified that there has been no increase in public transport fares so far.
Speaking to reporters, the RTO said that the proposal for any fare hike is still under consideration by the Government and that no final decision has been taken.
He added that the last notified fare rates for different categories of vehicles were issued in 2021.
Since then, he noted, transport stakeholders have been demanding a re-examination and enhancement of fares.
“Proposals were received from various stakeholders. After due examination, we submitted our recommendations to the Transport Commissioner, who also examined the matter and held deliberations with different stakeholders,” Irfan said.
He added that following an overall review, the proposal was placed before the Fare Fixation Committee.
“In the last meeting, attended by all concerned stakeholders, it was decided that a proposal suggesting a certain percentage increase would be forwarded to the Government,” he said.
The RTO emphasized that the proposal has already been submitted to the Government and any decision regarding fare revision rests solely with it.
“Once the Government approves the proposal, it will be notified through a formal order. Only after that can revised fares be charged,” he said.
Advising transporters not to act in haste, RTO warned against overcharging passengers.
