Rains in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, 06 Jan (H.S.) :A Yellow Alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts as rainfall is expected to resume in Kerala from Friday, following changes in atmospheric conditions linked to a cyclonic circulation near the equatorial region of the Bay of Bengal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD said isolated spells of heavy rain are likely in these two districts on Friday, prompting the precautionary alert. As per the department’s classification, heavy rainfall refers to precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Such rainfall could lead to temporary waterlogging, slippery road conditions, and localized disruptions, particularly in hilly and low-lying areas.

Meteorological officials explained that the cyclonic circulation currently present near the equatorial region of the Bay of Bengal is expected to gradually move towards the Sri Lanka region by Friday. As the system shifts, noticeable changes in prevailing weather conditions are anticipated across Tamil Nadu and Kerala over the coming days.

Southern Tamil Nadu is likely to receive comparatively higher rainfall during this period, while Kerala is expected to see an increase in rain activity from Friday onwards. According to the IMD, rainfall will be more prominent across the central and southern districts of Kerala.

Residents in these regions can expect cloudy skies accompanied by intermittent showers, with occasional spells of moderate to heavy rain in isolated areas. This development marks a shift from the relatively dry weather conditions that prevailed across much of the state in recent days.

Authorities have advised people in the Yellow Alert districts to remain cautious, especially those living in landslide-prone zones and areas vulnerable to flooding. Farmers, motorists, and those involved in outdoor activities have been urged to plan accordingly and remain alert to possible weather-related disruptions.

The IMD clarified that no orange or red alerts have been issued at present, indicating that widespread extreme weather is not expected for now. However, officials emphasized the need to closely monitor the evolving system over the Bay of Bengal, as any further intensification or change in its path could influence rainfall intensity and distribution.

The weather department will continue to issue regular updates, and the public has been advised to follow official forecasts and advisories for the latest information in the coming days.
