Madras High Court ruling on Deepathoon lighting is a setback for DMK government, says BJP's Nainar Nagenthran

Chennai, 06 January (H.S.) : Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nainar Nagenthran has strongly criticized the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government following the Madras High Court's ruling on the Deepathoon lighting ritual. The court dismissed the state government's appeal against a previous order that permitted the traditional lighting of the lamp atop the Thirupparankundram hill.

Nagenthran described the verdict as a significant rebuke to the administration, which he accused of intentionally creating a sense of panic and religious tension among the public for its own political benefit. He claimed that the government’s attempt to block the age-old ritual by citing law and order concerns was a misuse of authority.

The BJP leader further alleged that the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department had acted against the sentiments of devotees. He stated that the judiciary has once again stood as a guardian of constitutional values by rejecting the state’s restrictive stance. Nagenthran pointed out that the court has established that the Deepathoon belongs to the Tirupparankundram Subramania Swamy Temple and that the state must not interfere with such religious practices.

He warned that the public would not tolerate a government that shows hostility toward Hindu beliefs and disregards judicial directions. He concluded by urging the administration to respect the court's verdict and ensure that the rituals are conducted peacefully, noting that any government that ignores judicial authority will eventually face public rejection.
