DRI Seizes Illegal Foreign Cigarettes Worth ₹35 Lakh at Bhubaneswar Airport; Eight Detained

Bhubaneswar, 06 January (H.S.): The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), in coordination with the Customs Department, seized foreign-origin cigarettes worth approximately ₹35 lakh at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here on Tuesday.

According to official sources, the agencies recovered 25 packets of cigarettes and around 4,000 cigar sticks, all identified as foreign tobacco products allegedly brought into the country without valid customs documentation or clearance.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the consignment originated in Dubai and was routed through Bhubaneswar, with Mumbai identified as the intended final destination. Officials said the route is now under close surveillance as part of efforts to crack down on organised smuggling networks.

In connection with the seizure, eight persons have been detained by DRI and Customs officials for questioning. Authorities are examining their roles to ascertain the source of the consignment, its intended recipients, and the modus operandi employed in transporting the contraband.

Further investigation is underway.
