Guwahati, 6 January (HS): The Congress on Tuesday alleged “serious irregularities” in Assam’s draft voter list published after the Special Revision (SR) ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections and sought a halt to its finalisation. Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner, claiming unauthorised and unverified entries, including names added without residents’ knowledge.
Saikia cited instances from Guwahati and Nazira constituency and urged a transparent probe before finalising the rolls.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma dismissed the allegations, saying established procedures exist for corrections through Forms 6, 7 and 8 and advised the opposition to follow due process instead of creating controversy.
The Election Commission said Assam has 2.52 crore voters as per the integrated draft list, with claims and objections open till January 22. The final voter list will be published on February 10.---------------
