BJP slams Mamata government over alleged harassment of female journalist

Kolkata, 06 January (H.S.): Politics over women's safety and freedom of expression has intensified in West Bengal. The Bengal BJP, in a post shared on the social media platform X on Tuesday, levelled serious allegations against the state government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

According to the BJP, a female journalist in Hooghly district was allegedly instructed by fundamentalists to tie her hair and wear a veil, with an implicit threat behind these instructions. The party claimed that this incident is not a fictional story or an exaggeration, but an example of a real situation unfolding in Bengal.

The BJP stated that such incidents are often dismissed by linking them to neighboring Bangladesh, but this case is from West Bengal itself, where the state administration has allegedly remained silent.

In the post, the BJP alleged that freedom is gradually eroded—through orders, threats, and silence. First, instructions are given, then an atmosphere of fear is created, and finally, fear becomes normalized. The party said that if a female journalist is being given instructions on her clothing and conduct today, tomorrow it could be an attempt to control the life of any daughter.

The BJP accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of engaging in appeasement politics, claiming that this is leading to the erosion of the Constitution and the emergence of a parallel power structure. The party claims that women's safety and freedom are being jeopardized for the sake of vote bank politics.

At the end of the post, the BJP warned that a society that silently allows its daughters' wings to be clipped is mortgaging its own future, and Bengal should view this situation as a serious warning.

However, there has been no reaction from the Trinamool Congress regarding the BJP's post at the time of filing this report.
