Government Fisheries Push
The central government has approved or announced cumulative investments of ₹38,572 crore in the fisheries and aquaculture sector under various schemes since 2015. Cold water fisheries activities are emerging as rapidly high-potential sub-sectors in Himalayan and mountainous states like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
Trout Network Expansion
The Fisheries Department has expanded the rainbow trout hatchery network using glacier-fed water resources and achieved annual production of 14 lakh trout seed. In this sequence, Uttarakhand has signed an MoU with India-Tibet Border Police (ITBP) under the Jivanta Gram scheme to ensure trout supply in border villages.
Additionally, the central government has notified development of cold water fisheries clusters in Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. The government emphasizes transforming the sector into a technology-driven and market-oriented ecosystem through RAS, species diversification, capacity building, and infrastructure expansion.
