New Delhi/Varanasi, 04 January (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, via video conferencing, describing the sport as a symbol of teamwork, balance, and collective strength — qualities that he said mirror India’s overall development story.
Addressing athletes and dignitaries at the event, Prime Minister Modi expressed joy that his parliamentary constituency, Varanasi, was hosting the national tournament, and extended his best wishes to the players and participating teams. “Players have reached this level after immense effort, and their perseverance will now be put to the test on the volleyball courts of Varanasi,” he remarked.
He added that teams representing 28 states across India have gathered in the temple city, showcasing the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.
’Varanasi: A Sporting City of Tradition and Passion
Reiterating Varanasi’s centuries-old legacy in nurturing art, culture, and sports, the Prime Minister recalled that sports such as wrestling, boxing, kabaddi, and boat racing have long flourished in the city’s vibrant ecosystem. Institutions like Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Kashi Vidyapeeth, and UP College, he said, have produced several national-level athletes. “Varanasi is a city of sports lovers that welcomes everyone who comes in the pursuit of excellence,” he noted, adding that the city’s enthusiasm and hospitality would inspire the volleyball players throughout the championship.
No Victory is Ever Achieved Alone
Drawing an insightful comparison between volleyball and India’s national progress, Prime Minister Modi highlighted that both rely on trust, teamwork, and coordination. “Volleyball teaches us that no victory is ever achieved alone. Our success depends on our coordination, our trust in one another, and the readiness of our team,” he said.
He continued, “Every player has their own role and responsibility, and success is achieved only when each person performs their duty with seriousness. Our country, too, is moving forward in this spirit — from cleanliness drives to digital payments, and from Ek Ped Maa ke Naam to the mission of a Developed India. Every citizen and every region is contributing with the unified mantra of India First.”
India’s Sporting Transformation Since 2014
Reflecting on India’s remarkable progress in sports over the past decade, the Prime Minister noted that the country’s athletes have demonstrated growing strength, determination, and global presence. “Since 2014, India’s performance across various sports has improved steadily. We feel immense pride when we see members of Gen-Z hoisting the tricolour on international fields,” he said.
Recalling an era when players struggled with uncertainty and insufficient support, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the current government has transformed India’s sports ecosystem by increasing the sports budget and adopting an athlete-centric model.
“Today, talent identification, scientific training, nutrition, and transparent selection are integral to our policies. Sports are no longer a side pursuit—they are a pathway to national pride,” he added.
Reforms and Vision: The Road to Global Platforms
Discussing recent reforms, the Prime Minister announced that the government is implementing the National Sports Governance Act and the Khelo Bharat Policy 2025, which will promote transparency, empower sporting federations, and provide young athletes equal opportunities in both education and sports.
“Today the nation is riding on the Reform Express, connecting every sector and destination of development — with sports being one of them,” he said.
Highlighting key achievements, PM Modi mentioned the success of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and India’s increasing focus on international exposure and world-class infrastructure. He proudly declared, “The 2030 Commonwealth Games are set to be hosted in India, and the country is making determined efforts to host the 2036 Olympics as well. Our aim is to give more and more athletes the opportunity to compete and bring glory to the nation.”
Sports Infrastructure and Opportunities in Varanasi
The Prime Minister underlined that the growth of sports infrastructure in Varanasi reflects the broader national movement for athletic excellence. He pointed out that the Sigra Stadium, the venue of the volleyball championship, has been upgraded with modern amenities, while new sports complexes are emerging across the region to nurture upcoming talent.
PM Modi said Varanasi’s recent transformation — hosting events like G-20 meetings, Kashi Tamil Sangamam, Kashi Telugu Sangamam, and the Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan — has boosted its tourism, economy, and visibility.
“The National Volleyball Championship is another jewel in Varanasi’s crown, strengthening its position as a premier hub for cultural and sporting events,” he asserted.

Concluding his speech, Prime Minister Modi invited participants to experience the charm of Varanasi — from Baba Vishwanath Temple to Ganga boating, and from the warmth of local hospitality to the taste of the city’s winter delicacy, malaiyyo.
“Enjoy the spirit of Varanasi along with your game. Every spike, block, and point scored here will add height to India’s sporting ambitions,” he said, conveying best wishes to all the players.
