Kolkata, 16 January (H.S.) : Justice Sujoy Paul on Friday, January 16, took oath as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. He will retire in June 2026. Following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium and a notification issued by the Government of India, Justice Paul has been appointed as the forty-fourth Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court with effect from January 16, 2026.
The oath-taking ceremony was held in the presence of West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose. The event was attended by sitting and former judges, Chief Justices of various High Courts, state ministers, and senior judicial officers.
Justice Sujoy Paul was appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on July 18, 2025. He subsequently served as the Acting Chief Justice of the court from October 8, 2025, to January 15, 2026. Prior to his tenure in Calcutta, he served as a judge of the Telangana High Court and later as its Acting Chief Justice.
In his address, Justice Paul reflected on his long legal journey and paid special tribute to his mother, who raised him as a single parent after the death of his father. He remarked that although he had joined the Calcutta High Court in the “December phase” of his career, he would make every possible effort to uphold the dignity, sanctity, and efficiency of the institution.
Quoting Narada Smriti in his speech, Justice Paul said that a court cannot be called a court without elders; elders are not truly elders unless they uphold dharma; dharma is not dharma unless it promotes truth; and truth cannot be called truth if it is tainted by flawed reasoning.
