Internet Services Suspended for 24 Hours in Sundargarh After Group Clash

Bhubaneswar, 15 January (H.S.): In the wake of a group clash that left at least 12 people injured, the Sundargarh district administration on Thursday suspended internet services in the town for 24 hours to prevent further escalation of tension.

Internet services were suspended with effect from 6:00 pm on Thursday as authorities moved swiftly to contain unrest following an incident of violence allegedly triggered by rumours related to beef. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of misinformation through social media and other online platforms.

Sundargarh District Collector Subhankar Mohapatra said that Section 163 has been imposed across the town to maintain law and order. He added that both the internet suspension and the prohibitory orders were necessary to ensure public safety and prevent further disturbances.

Tension reportedly flared when an agitated group from the Regent Market area allegedly vandalised a meat shop near the Nari Kalyan Kendra. During the incident, a pickup van was set on fire, while a car and a scooter were also damaged.

Police personnel and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information. The fire was quickly brought under control, and the situation is currently under close watch by the district administration and law enforcement agencies.

Authorities have appealed to residents to remain calm, refrain from spreading rumours, and cooperate with the police to help restore and maintain peace in the town.
