Guwahati, 15 January (HS): Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Thursday inaugurated the GI Mahotsav — “Promoting India’s Heritage through GI Products” — at Arya Vidyapeeth College Ground in Guwahati. The event is being organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry with support from the Ministry of MSME.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor said the GI Mahotsav is a tribute to the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative and an effort to integrate heritage with economic progress. He highlighted that GI-tagged products reflect a region’s culture, tradition and indigenous knowledge, while also enhancing the income and dignity of artisans and farmers.

Referring to Assam, Acharya showcased GI products such as Muga and Eri silk, Sualkuchi weaving, Sarthebari bell metal craft, Asharikandi terracotta, Assam tea and Kaji Nemu as symbols of the state’s rich heritage. He called for coordinated efforts by all stakeholders to safeguard and promote India’s GI heritage.

Several dignitaries, entrepreneurs, artisans and officials were present at the inaugural programme.---------------
